Fishermen’s Village: A unique marine model for workers in the fisheries sector

The Fishermen’s Village in Ras Madrakah and Al Khaluf Coast in the Wilayat of Duqm is one of the successful models of the Ministry of Agricultural and Fisheries and Water Resources represented by the Fisheries Department in Al Wusta Governorate to support Omani fishermen from all governorates of the Sultanate. It is one of the development projects in the fisheries field in Al Wusta Governorate.

Saleh al Sunaidi, Head of the Fisheries Resources Development in Al Wusta Governorate, said, “The project of the fishermen’s village in the Khaluf and Ras Madrakah coasts has been well received by citizens and those interested in the fish sector because of the benefit it provided to Omani fishermen from the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah, North and South Al Batinah, and boat owners from the people of the Wilayat of Duqm, owners of transport and marketing vehicles and ice factories.’’

He explained that the aim of the project is to increase fish production, provide high quality fish in local markets, increase the income of Omani fishermen working in the fishing sector, and encourage the people of Al Wusta Governorate to practice the fishing profession.

The total number of beneficiaries from this project is about 50 fishermen in Ras Madrakah, 25 from al Sharqiyah and al Batinah, 25 vehicle owners and five companies working in the field. As for the fishermen’s village on al Khaluf Coast, the number of beneficiaries from the artisanal fishermen who own boats is about (80), and the artisanal fishermen who practice the profession from other governorates are about (220), and several (60) owners of transport and marketing vehicles in the fishery field, and (7) companies working in the fishing profession.
