Oman football head coach Branko Ivankovic will begin his first official assignment with the national team as he will lead the Sultanate football team in the remaining three matches of Group E matches in the joint Asian qualifiers for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in China and the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.
The Croatian coach is fully aware that the match against the group toppers Qatar is the top test for him as a coach since he was appointed as head coach from January 2020.
The 'Red Warriors' fans are looking for this top clash which will decide the first team that will seal the spot for the third and final round of the qualifiers. Qatar won the first leg match 2-1 at at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah in October 2019. Oman team was then trained by coach Erwin Koeman during that period.
QUALIFIERS BEGIN
The second round qualifier matches of the group began on Thursday and will conclude on June 15 and all the fixtures will be played at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.
The 67-year-old coach accompanied with the technical staff members monitored on Thursday Qatar and India and Bangladesh-Afghanistan match. The technical staff is expected to identify the strategy for the upcoming fixture against Qatar on Monday. Red Warriors will take on Afghanistan on Friday after Qatar’s match and then will conclude the preliminary joint qualifier against Bangladesh on June 15.
Since arrival in Doha on Tuesday, the Omani players are undergoing comprehensive training sessions ahead from the top clash against Asian Champions Qatar.
During the previous evening sessions, the technical staff of the national team focused on different technical and tactical sides. The last warm-up session lasted for one and half hour at Qatar University complex. It is expected that the Croatian coach will begin the remaining three matches with similar starting line-up of the last two friendlies against Thailand and Indonesia which saw Oman on the winning side.
Mohsin al Ghassani and Abdulaziz al Maqbali are expected to lead the attacking with assistance from Zaher al Aghbari and Salah al Yahyaei. Four goals were scored by the strikers in the last two preparatory matches which reflect the confidence of the frontline.
STRICT PROTOCOL
The joint Asian qualifiers started under strict medical protocol with a crowd attendance of 30 per cent only. According to the organising committee, the health protocols will be implemented for the tea’s in all the areas including accommodation, training venues.
All the teams and participants are requested to do full adherence to the precautionary measures including all the events and activities whether inside or outside the venues.
