Register to deal in lobster as season ends on Monday

The lobster fishing season for the current season in the waters of the Sultanate is ending on Monday. The three-month season began in early March in the coastal states of the governorates of South Sharqiyah, Wusta and Dhofar.

The Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources has invited all fishermen who practice lobster fishing and all the companies, institutions, hotels, restaurants and individuals who deal in buying, selling, trading and exporting lobster to register their stocks, noting that it will not be allowed to trade or export of it after the end of the season, which is May-end, unless registered with the ministry.

The season began in March with many awareness-raising activities organised by the ministry, represented by the directorates and fisheries departments in the governorates of South Sharqiyah, Wusat and Dhofar.

The ministry stressed the importance of adhering to fishing according to the specified season and using the authorised fishing methods to preserve this vital wealth from the risk of extinction. Fish control teams were active on the coasts of the three governorates during the season.

The preliminary indicators indicate high productivity, especially in some wilayats of Dhofar, Wusta and South Sharqiyah. Production reached one tonne per day with the beginning of the season. At the same time, prices stabilised between RO 3 and RO 5 per kilogram of lobster.

The lobster is an arthropod animal of crustaceans because it has a hard shell and ten legs. It is one of the marine resources that the Sultanate’s water abounds and rich in protein, potassium, zinc, nicotine and iron. Lobster contains an appropriate amount of calcium, magnesium, sodium and several vitamins. This wealth is located on the coasts of the Sultanate overlooking the Arabian Sea in the governorates.
