Oman’s Abdulaziz al Maqbali netted the winner in the first preparatory match of the team against Thailand on Tuesday as part of the 'Red Warriors' camp in Dubai which will conclude on May 30.
The only goal in the game came through Al Maqbali four minutes before ending the first half.
The Red Warriors were the better side in the first 45 minutes of the game as they created many scoring attempts.
The Thais tried to bounce back in the second half but all the opportunities saved by the Oman national team players.
Oman head coach Branko Ivankovic substituted eight players during the match, bringing in Jameel al Yahmadi, Essam al Subhi, Ahmed al Kaabi, Yazeed al Mashani, Khalid al Hajri, Yaseen al Shiyadi, Arshad al Alawi and Saud al Habsi.
The Croatian coach preferred to start with Al Maqbali and Mohsin al Ghassani in the forward line-up, while Al Mundher al Alawi did not take part in the match. It is expected that the 67-year-old coach will have a different starting list in the friendly game against Indonesia on Saturday and will provide equal chances for the faces who did not join in the first preparatory match.
The underway preparatory external camp is part of the team’s preparation for the joint qualification of the 2022 Fifa World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup Championship which will be hosted in Qatar from June 7 at Al Sadd club’s Jassim bin Hamed Stadium.
Al MAQBALI 'KEY PLAYER'
On the other hand, the AFC website selected the national football star, Abdulaziz al Maqbali, as the key player of the team.
'Striker Abdulaziz al Muqbali brings considerable experience to the Omani front line, with the 32-year-old making his third appearance in the Asian Qualifiers, having also played in the preliminaries for 2014 and 2018. He has already scored twice in the current campaign – both goals coming against Afghanistan – and he lends physical presence to the attack, particularly with his impressive ability in the air,” the website adds.
'Red Warriors' will have three more games in the joint World Cup and AFC Asian qualifiers. Oman will resume joint qualifier with a top clash against Qatar on June 7 at Al Sadd club’s Jassim bin Hamed Stadium in Doha. They will take on Afghanistan on June 11 and will face Bangladesh in the concluding match on June 15 at the same venue in Doha.
The Sultanate are currently positioned second in Group E with 12 points while Asian champions Qatar are topping the group with 13 points from five games. Afghanistan are placed third with four points. India (3 points) and Bangladesh (1 point) are in the third and fourth positions respectively.
