The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has clarified the social media reports that some passengers on board an Oman-based airline were tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival at Cairo International Airport.

CAA said health and safety protocols to limit the spread of the virus are applicable to all airlines operating to and from the Sultanate, and that even Oman-based carriers are obligated to ensure that passengers on their flights meet the requirements of the destination country.

The authority stated that all travelers had PCR with a negative result before boarding the flight bound for Cairo as per the measures enforced by the Egyptian authorities.

CAA said the requirements for entering some countries - including the Sultanate - include PCR tests on arrival as there is a possibility of infection during the period between the PCR tests before travel and the day of arrival.

It added that a number of positive cases were reported by travelers coming from Cairo onboard Egyptian airlines flights and the competent authorities in the Sultanate those cases as per the health protocols in force in the Sultanate.

Background

Egypt had banned the entry of seven Indian passengers on Thursday after testing positive for COVID-19 upon arrival despite the negative PCR test.

The health authorities at the airport tested seven Indian passengers arriving from Oman using the rapid molecular test that only takes 15 minutes to detect infections.

The passengers were isolated at an airport hall before boarding the same flight back to Muscat.

The health authorities in Cairo have asked airline operators to provide the names of passengers arriving from countries where the Indian variant has been detected.
