People with UTI advised caution during pandemic

Medics have alerted about urinary tract infection (UTI) that can also be one of the symptoms of the Covid-19 disease.
Although UTI is normal, especially among women, they are advised to take more water and medication if needed. But there are UTI cases in some hospitals that are associated with coronavirus infection. One shouldn’t delay seeking medical assistance, say some experts.
“UTI can cause viral inflammation of the bladder giving rise to increased frequency and infection which needs to be ascertained by medical experts,” says Dr Renchi Mathew, Consultant Physician.
A person would experience frequent urge to pass urine, fever, flank pains, all typical symptoms of urinary infection. From Germany, some patients presented like this with or without other specific Covid-19 symptoms.
“It is reported as one of the rare symptoms of Covid-19. The possibility is that the virus causes inflammation of the urinary bladder as part of its infection process causing these symptoms,” says Dr Benny Panakkal, Medical Director and Senior Cardiology Expert with Badr al Samaa.
“This means that apart from lungs, it can show symptoms related to heart, nervous system, Gastrointestinal system as well as urological,” adds Dr Benny.
However, it is still not clear whether the virus directly causes UTI yet. Hence, there is a need of controlling blood sugar.
“There is increased incidence of secondary infection in Covid patients mostly due to high blood sugar, as Covid infection drives the blood sugar high. It ‘s acute stress on the body and also the steroids which we give for the lung involvement, especially if the patient is diabetic,” says Dr Dilip Singhvi, Specialist Internal Medicine at Apollo Hospital.
He adds that this paves the way for high blood sugar, which increases the risk of secondary infection like UTI, intestinal and colon infections, fungal infections, and bacterial infections.
