Wild rabbits of Masirah facing risk of extinction

The wild rabbit, one of the most important species found in Masirah Island, is threatened with extinction, as they have become completely extinct in some areas.
Majid bin Hamad al Khanbashi, assistant director of the Nature Reserves Department, said that the wild rabbit on Masirah Island has adapted to the island's natural environment.
He added that what distinguishes the wild rabbit on the island is its short ears and small body size, noting that it is the smallest of other wild rabbits found in Europe and Africa, and it may differ in its color, which between gray and brown with white undersides.
He explained that the wild rabbit is seen in the open sandy and gravel plains of the island and areas characterized by the presence of vegetation, pointing to its ability to get rid of its enemies thanks to its strong senses represented in its eyes, while the nose and ears are always active.
