MANILA: Four people were killed and 45 injured on Friday when a water tank burst, damaging about 60 houses in a City North of the Philippine Capital, Local Officials said. The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that 13-metre tank which had a capacity of 2,000 cubic metres, busted before dawn while people were asleep in their homes in San Jose Del Monte City in Bulacan province, north of Manila.

The victims included a 50-year-old man and a one-year-old who drowned from the surge of the water, said Mayor Arthur Robles.

Two other victims died after being hit by debris from the exploded steel water tank, he added.

Footage and photos from the scene showed some houses flattened in the accident, while motorcycles, twisted corrugated, galvanised iron sheets and other debris littered the streets.

Investigators are determining the cause of the accident, according to Robles.

“We cannot rule out foul play yet, the tank had no rust and it’s very smooth. If it suddenly got a hole in it, would it really explode like that?,’’ he said.

A local water district officer said the seven-year-old tank had been inspected regularly for any problems, adding that water pressure was one possible cause of the accident. — dpa
