MUSCAT, MAY 27 - Those good Samaritans, who want to lend a helping hand to the needy in the Sultanate or elsewhere, have been advised to use the official channels to make donations in order to ensure that their donations reach the right people. Accordingly, local donations can be made to the officially approved organisations by the Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) while support to initiatives outside the country can be made through Oman Charitable Organisation (OCO) which promotes its services online through its portal www.oco.org.om.

“This is to ensure that the donations of people in Oman are used for constructive purposes and helping the right, deserving people around the world”, said a senior spokesperson at the OCO. The OCO has been donating 38,000 food boxes to the needy Omani families this Ramadhan. Each box contains some 10 to 12 essentials valued at RO 40, and citizens may collect them from convenient locations.

Anyone who wants to take part in the local charity drive or international aid initiative can use one of the 4 methods to do the same, according to him.

“Direct bank transfer to the OCO account is the first method while approaching any of the OCO branches in Muscat, Suhar, Salalah or Sur and handing over your donations is the second way of donating. Additionally, one can use ITA portal of www.donate.om or respond to Omantel or Ooredoo message service requesting your donations”, the spokesperson added.

OCO is the only authorised agency to receive donations for overseas charity initiatives. It provides support and financing of the social care programmes intended for the general welfare of the people, while extending its support to the children, orphans, disabled and the elderly sponsorship programmes. OCO also provides emergency relief in the event of fires or disasters or natural calamities both within the Sultanate and outside.
