Unmanned vehicles: Key pillar of the fourth industrial revolution

Muscat: The international conference -  UVS-Oman 2019 -  opened at the College of Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on Wednesday.


The first of its kind in Oman, the conference is held under the patronage of Sheikh Salim bin Mustahil al Mashani, advisor at the Diwan of Royal Court.


The workshops and tutorials being conducted alongside the conference provide a good platform for researchers, government representatives and industry officials to discuss how to best use driverless vehicles in the country.



Speaking during the inaugural function, Prof Amer al- Rawas, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Community Service, said that one of the main priorities of the university and the College of Engineering is the design, production, use, and requirements of unmanned vehicles, whether in water, land, or air. 


“This represents one of the main fast-developing streams of current technology, the world is witnessing.  This is a key pillar of the fourth industrial revolution”, he said.



This university approach, which has a great deal of world attention, will contribute to the preparation of graduate students in different stages, and will equip them with the required analytical aptitudes and latest technologies and their application in various industrial, cultural, educational, and other fields, he said.




Prof. Hadj Bourdoucen, Dean, College of Engineering, General Conference Chairman said that the engineering sector that is related  to the design, production, and use the unmanned vehicle systems is considered as one of the important sectors of education, research and technical development nowadays.


“From its belief in the importance of keeping up with the scientific development in all aspects of engineering, and the attention to establish the foundation for education research geared towards modern investment in technology, the college has organized the first unmanned vehicle systems conference in Oman and the region”, he said. 


This is part of the college future vision and strategic planning that is in line with SQU and the Sultanate’s plans, he added.



 UVSC Oman 2019, aims at creating an interactive platform for the exchange of ideas and scientific experiments, and field technical aspects among interested groups in unmanned vehicles from academicians, researchers, engineering, and industrialists, as well as regulating agencies for the use of such vehicles.
