MUSCAT: The National Defence College (NDC) on Monday hosted Nickolay Mladenov, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, to give lectures on the United Nations (UN) and the Security Council in the presence of Lt Gen Ahmed bin Harith al Nabhani, Chief of Staff of the Sultan’s Armed Forces (SAF).
The lecture comes within the general curriculum of the NDC fifth session. Maj Gen Salim bin Musallam Qatan, NDC Commandant, welcomed the guest.
In his first lecture themed “The United Nations and its role in the maintenance of international peace and security,” the lecturer addressed a range of topics that included the nature of work of the UN bodies and system, the general principles and rules of the UN Charter, the UN role in supporting international development and peace programmes, as well as challenges facing the UN in tackling global issues.
He also spoke about the reasons why the UN had been unable to achieve many of the goals in relation to political, security, economic and technical fields, and forecasting the UN future in light of the international regime changes.
The second lecture, entitled “The Security Council and its roles in global peace,” covered several themes, represented in the nature of work of the Security Council, the powers of the Council, and the extent of legal force binding on its resolutions, the strengths and weaknesses of the Security Council as one of the most important instruments of security, as well as the role of the Security Council in achieving peace and the challenges it faces in imposing global peace and security.
The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process also talked about forecasting the Security Council’s future and its development in view of the international regime.
