UN panel hails Oman’s women empowerment

GENEVA: Members of United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) have hailed the progress achieved by the Sultanate in the field of women empowerment. They also commended the second and third periodic reports presented to the committee and the answers made by the Sultanate’s delegation.


The Sultanate’s delegation was led by Shaikh Mohammed bin Said al Kalbani, Minister of Social Development and Chairman of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in the presence of Abdullah bin Nasser al Rahbi, Sultanate’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the members of Permanent Mission of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and the members of the Sultanate’s delegation.


The members of the committee formed to discuss the report expressed their satisfaction over the Sultanate’s efforts aimed at achieving gender equality and empowering women in the social and economic fields commending the Royal attention accorded by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and the support he extends to Omani women in various fields.


Presenting the Sultanate’s report before the committee, the minister of social development reviewed the achievements made by the Sultanate towards empowering women and enhancing their social roles and providing them with various means of attention and protection.


The minister of social development affirmed that the Sultanate works in accordance to its strategic plans aimed at constantly improving national legislations to ensure that women participate positively in the development and nation building pointing out that these plans are in line with the Sultanate’s principles underscoring women empowerment. — ONA
