UN calls for stability in Lebanon after vote

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations on Monday urged Lebanon’s politicians to act responsibly to protect Lebanon’s stability following elections that saw Hezbollah group make gains.

“We hope that all Lebanese political stakeholders will continue to act responsibly in the days following polling to protect Lebanon’s stability, which should include the swift formation of a government,” said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

The Hezbollah was set to cement its dominance in Lebanon after the party of its main rival, Prime Minister Saad Hariri, suffered heavy losses.

Hariri announced that his political movement had lost a third of its seats in parliament following the election.

He said the results, which have not yet been officially announced, credit his Future Movement with 21 of parliament’s 128 seats, a drop from the 33 it controlled in the outgoing legislature.

The prime minister admitted that he had hoped for a stronger showing but said he remained happy with the result, which contrasts with the expected gains made by the rival camp led by Hezbollah.

The Future Movement “has been given a large bloc of 21 lawmakers in parliament,” a relaxed-looking Hariri told journalists.
