WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will hold unprecedented talks on June 12 in Singapore, marking an extraordinary shift in tone after a year spent trading insults and threats of war.

Trump for the first time announced the date and location via Twitter for the “highly anticipated meeting.”

“We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!” he wrote. Plans for the meeting were first revealed in early March by South Korean officials in Washington.

Trump’s tweet came hours after the early-morning arrival in Washington of three US detainees, who were released to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during his Wednesday visit to Pyongyang on a mission to finalise details for the summit.

The Trump-Kim talks would be the culmination of a whirlwind rapprochement with Pyongyang, after more than a year of escalating rhetoric, as Trump pushed for tightened international sanctions in response to a series provocative weapons tests by North Korea.

“We’re starting off on a new footing,” Trump said earlier on Thursday, as he welcomed Kim Hak-Song, Tony Kim and Kim Dong-Chul at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

The newly freed detainees smiled and flashed peace signs as they emerged from a military plane in the middle of the night.

“This is a special night for these three really great people. Congratulations on being in this country,” Trump said as he stood with the former captives.
