Muscat, Oct 8 - The tropical system heading towards the Sultanate has progressed from a ‘deep depression’ into a ‘tropical storm’, according to the Met Office. The tropical storm, which has been named ‘Luban’, is 940 km from Salalah, it said. An official at the Met Department told the Observer that Luban has deepened further in the past hours towards southern coasts of Oman and Yemen. At the current rate, it is expected to become a ‘Category 1’ cyclone. The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre said that it has observed the formation of a tropical storm southeast of Arabian Sea with maximum wind speeds of 35-40 knots per hour around the centre.

As per the latest prediction charts, Dhofar and Al Wusta governorates are likely to feel the indirect impact of Luban from Wednesday with isolated rain and rising sea waves with maximum heights between 2-3 metres. The latest numerical weather predictions forecast show movement of the system towards west and north-west direction. The Indian Met Department (IMD), which has also been monitoring Luban, said the system has been moving towards south Oman and Yemen coasts. The Public Authority of Civil Aviation, under the leadership of Dr Mohammed bin Nasser al Zaabi, CEO, held its first internal meeting to discuss the preparations required in the wake of the advancing tropical system.
