NEW YORK: The NBA’s record-setting 79th triple-double of the season came from an unexpected quarter as Spain’s Ricky Rubio registered 11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in Minnesota’s overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night. The previous league-wide season high for reaching double digits in three statistical categories in a single game was 78 set in 1988-89 — a mark that looks to be left in the dust with nearly six weeks remaining this season. Rubio’s fifth career triple-double, and the Timberwolves guard’s first since the 2014-15 season, made him the 21st NBA player to notch a triple-double this season.

Most Valuable Player front-runners Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder and James Harden of the Houston Rockets have led the triple-double explosion. Westbrook, with 30, is one shy of joining Wilt Chamberlain for second on the all-time list for triple-doubles in a season. Chamberlain posted 31 in 1967-68. Oscar Robertson has the all-time record with 41 in the 1961-62 campaign. Harden has put up 15 triple-doubles for the Rockets. — AFP
