TRA still evaluating bids for third telecom operator: STC

Saudi Telecom Company  has made a statement on the Tadawul (Saudi Stock Exchange) website on regarding its offer to Omani Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in order to bid for the third license of the mobile phone network in Sultanate of Oman. The company said it would like to announce that it has received on 8/12/1438H corresponding to 30/8/2017 a notification from (TRA) indicating that it is still in the process of evaluating the received bids and the (TRA) is expecting the process to continue until 30/11/2017, and the Company will subsequently announce any developments in this regard at time.


The winner of the licence for third telecom operator in Oman will be announced on November 30, the Observer had reported on Tuesday. The winner was to be announced on September 4. In May this year, the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) said that several companies, which include regional players, had expressed interest to participate in the bids for the third telecom operator’s license.


The deadline to receive the bids expired on May 1.


TRA stated that it is evaluating the proposals as per the procedures laid out in the information memorandum (IM) as part of the government’s keenness to increase competition in the telecommunications market and thereby improve the quality of services.


The Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC), Kuwait Zain and other operators told their respective regional stock markets that the bid includes a complete business plan, technical and financial plans along with a financial offer for the license.


According to IM, the qualified bidders will be shortlisted and announced by August 8, 2017, and the license winner will be announced on September 4, 2017.
