Too much salt

Nizar al Musalmy - nizar.nmh.musalmy@gmail.com - Since the day Junior was born, his mother has liked to cook food for the family almost every day. The day before yesterday, she prepared diner after a long, hard day at work.

On that evening, she spent a good time in her kitchen, mixing cooked rice with bread crumbs, eggs, chopped ‘nana’, soya sauce, pepper and salt.

She then shaped the mixture into balls and molded them into burger shape. She then grilled the burgers on both sides until they turned golden brown, while basting oil on both sides.

She arranged them so neatly on a big plate at our dining table ready to be served. She placed clean empty plates on the table and called us to have diner.

As I started to eat, the food had too much salt. As I waited to see if anyone noticed, I decided to continue eating as normal and just smiled at her and asked her how the day at work was. Junior and his sister were curiously waiting to see my reaction with the too salty food, but I eat and finished every bite!

When I got up from the table that evening, the mother of junior apologized for the too much salt. I coolly responded to her saying: “Honey, I love too much salt.”

Later that night, Junior came to say good night and he asked me if I really liked the food with too much salt. I wrapped him in my arms and said, “Your Momma put in a hard day at work today and she’s real tired. And besides - a little too much of salt in the food never hurt anyone!”

I explained that life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people and no one individual is perfect. I told him that over the years, your mother and I have learnt to accept each other’s fault - and choosing to celebrate each other’s differences - is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

Understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship. He kissed me good night and off he went to bed.

That night I prayed for Junior that he learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of his life and leave them to God. Because in the end, He’s the only One who will be able to give him a relationship where ‘too much salt’ in the food isn’t a deal-breaker!

Giving each other respect and consideration requires a great deal of maturity. You have to think selflessly for a moment, and see things from your partner’s point of view. No matter how strongly you feel, sometimes you have to restrain yourself for the greater good. One needs to be sensitive to the needs of others and have a willing attempt to see and see the world from the other person’s perspective. Flexibility is the ability and willingness of a person to adjust to change, to accept differences in a partner and to adapt if necessary. Have a nice weekend!
