Three sectors — construction, wholesale/retail and manufacturing — have emerged as prime movers for the government plans to recruit 25,000 Omanis in the private sector, according to latest statistics.

Under the government plan, 14,883 Omanis have been recruited in the private sector (10,092 males, 4,791 females) between December 3 and March 5.

Males accounted for 68 per cent of the appointments.

The Ministry of Manpower said the construction sector employed 5,025 Omanis, including 3,974 males, followed by wholesale and retail trade (2,103) and manufacturing (2,043). Of the total, 7,450 are General Education Diploma (GED) holders and 2,514 university diploma holders.

Last week, 85 companies from various governorates of Oman invited thousands of job-seekers for interviews and tests as part of the recruitment drive.

Construction, mining, quarrying, wholesale and retail and repair of motor vehicles accounted for 50.7 per cent of Omanis working in the private sector and insured under Public Authority for Social Insurance until the end of 2017.

Meanwhile, the mining sector has been identified as one of the sectors with a potential for large-scale investment due to its attractiveness to both domestic and foreign investors.
