Third Duqm Refinery Cup kicks off today

DUQM: The third edition of Duqm Refinery Cup kicks off this week on Tuesday with the participation of local teams and others representing the companies and projects currently working in Al Wusta Governorate. The thrilling tournament is held for the third year in a row and will showcase 32 teams divided into eight groups, each group will contain four teams that will play in tournament system in the first round scheduled for December 12 and play-offs to be held along with the finals on December 19 and 20 .


The tournament aims at enhancing spirit of brotherhood and solidarity in the society in a competitive yet friendly atmosphere. Also, the tournament aims at discovering local talents and uplifting their skills to become professionals in the future. The Duqm Refinery Cup is one of the most anticipated annual events in Al Wusta Governorate and is organised by Duqm Refinery. Oman Drydock Company was the winner of the last two editions of the cup.


Commenting on the initiative, Jasim bin Hassan al Ajmi, Head of Corporate Sustainability at Duqm Refinery, said: “We are committed towards building a strong relationship with the local community and are using football as a means to engage with youth in the region. Duqm Refinery Cup is a platform for friendship and fair competition between the participating teams. We look forward to have an exciting tournament and hope everyone in the community to attend the matches”.


This year, the first three teams in the competition will be qualified to the world’s largest amateur 5-a-side football tournament (F5WC) qualifiers to be held as part of Muscat Festival 2018. The winner of F5WC qualifiers in Muscat Festival 2018 will represent the Sultanate in the finals to be held in Shanghai in September 2018.
