Swedish energy firm Tethys Oil has announced the launch of a seismic campaign targeted the wholly-owned and operated Block 49 located in the southwest of the country on the Sultanate’s border with Saudi Arabia.
The seismic campaign marks a key milestone in an initial three-year work programme drawn up by the company to help unlock the hydrocarbon potential of the 15,439 sq kilometre concession straddling the dunes of the Rub Al Khali desert. According to a statement issued by the Stockholm-headquartered E&P company, a total of 250 sq kilometres of 3D and 315 kilometres of 2D seismic data will be acquired in the northeastern part of the license.  The objective, it said, is to further define possible oil traps, as well as enhance the company’s understanding of deeper parts of the acreage.

The campaign follows the successful reprocessing of older 2D seismic data acquired by previous operators, revealing a number of “seismic anomalies”, which typically point to the presence of hydrocarbons. A geological model assembled by Tethys Oil based on this data has also confirmed the presence of source rock and potential reservoir rocks, it noted.

Commenting on the launch of the seismic programme, Tethys Oil’s Managing Director Magnus Nordin said: “The new seismic survey is an important step in further understanding of the block and will play an important part in the planning and design of the continued work programme on Block 49.”
