TAISM hosts regional swimming

The American International School of Muscat (TAISM) welcomed 240 swimmers and 30 coaches for the South Asia Inter-Schools Association (SAISA) Swim Championships, which was held here recently. The swim competition was organised by TAISM Athletic director Luther Rauk, with the help of more than 70 parent and staff volunteers, and 15 referees from the Oman Swim Association. This was the second time TAISM has hosted this regional swim competition.


The competition included events in Breaststroke, Backstroke, Freestyle, Butterfly, Individual Medleys and Relays with race distances of 50 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres. Meet events were divided by boys and girls and age groups. Swimmers competed in six different age/gender groups beginning with 10-12 year old girls and boys, 13-14 year old girls and boys and finally the 15-19 year old girls and boys.


The first place team trophy was awarded to the Overseas School of Colombo, Sri Lanka with a total of 1,799 points. Second place went to TAISM with 1,639.5 points and third place went to Lincoln School, Nepal with 1,560 points.


The TAISM swim team consisted of 30 Middle and High School swimmers. They have been training since August under the leadership of the TAISM swim coaches Cori Lee, Grace Luna and Tom Yates, all teachers at the school. Coach Lee praised had praise for the efforts of the swimmers. “The coaches are proud of the swimmers’ hard work, dedication and commitment to the team displayed throughout the season. The results of their hard work and dedication were evident in the many SAISA and school records broken, and the 196 personal best performances by TAISM swimmers in this three day competition,” said Lee.


TAISM families accommodated the visiting swimmers and coaches in their homes. It proved to be a great opportunity for cultural sharing and developing friendships that will continue beyond the weekend.


2017 TEAMS: American Community School (ACS) from Jordan, American International School Chennai (AISC) from India, American International School Dhaka (AISD) from Bangladesh, American School of Bombay (ASB) from India, Karachi American School (KAS) from Pakistan, Lahore American School (LAS) from Pakistan, Lincoln School (LS) from Nepal, Overseas School Colombo (OSC) from Sri Lanka, and The American International School of Muscat (TAISM).


43 SAISA records were broken with five set by TAISM swimmers:

*Girls 15-19 100 Freestyle, 1:02.89; S Lee
