MUSCAT: A two-and-a-half-year-old boy underwent a successful micro surgery that has helped him regain the ability to control his paralysed facial muscles.

A team led by Dr Sheikhan al Hashmi, a consultant in the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, Burn and Craniofacial Surgery, Khoula Hospital, performed the surgery.

The boy, who is under a regular follow-up at the hospital’s outpatient clinic, regained the ability to control his paralysed muscles.

It all began when a sharp object hit the boy at his home, causing a tiny and deep wound at the base of his skull behind the right ear. This paralysed muscles in half of his face.

As a result, it affected his ability to blink, open/close the eyes, smile or frown.

The paralysis also affected the production of tears in his eyes.

“We noticed that the right side of his face was not moving and his right eye was not closing when he cried,” said his parents. — ONA
