Sur students hold cycle rally to mark Down Syndrome Day

By Aziza Rashid Ali Abdullah  al Muqbali — SUR, March 22 - To mark the World Down Syndrome Day, public relations students at Sur College of Applied Sciences on Tuesday organised cycle rally of 21 kilometres in Sur. The event was inaugurated by Shaikh Nasser bin Said al Senani, the Director of Sports Affairs, South al Sharqiyah governorate and the dean of college Dr Ahmed bin Juma al Riyami.


The rally is a part of the awareness campaign on Down syndrome, with the theme ‘Let us embrace them’, organised by the students.


The two month long campaign aims to spread awareness on Down syndrome and the rights of the people with Down syndrome.


Around 35 cyclists from Sur rode a distance of 21 km from Al Aija to the college campus.


Children welcomed the rally at the college campus by releasing 21 helium filled balloons to the sky.


Commenting on the event, al Senani said: “Sports Affairs encourages these initiatives to enhance the energies of our youth.


Also such events will foster their skills and abilities through their active participation in activities like this.


The participants in rally were very enthusiastic about the social cause of the cycle rally.


Khalid al Saadi, one of the cyclists said, “ This event was a good initiative for public relations students to promote their campaign, and showed their fruitful efforts to support people with Down syndrome. Cyclists were honoured at the end of the event.


Sur Plaza hotel, Sur Beach Holiday Resort, Golden Line advertising, Sur Gift Market were the official sponsors of the event.
