Sultanate’s role in peace draws UN chief’s praise

MUSCAT: On behalf of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, His Highness Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmood al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers, received here on Tuesday Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and his delegation. The UN Secretary-General expressed his greetings to His Majesty the Sultan along with his best wishes of permanent success to His Majesty and the government. HH Sayyid Fahd commended the distinguished role being carried out by the UN in enhancing communication among countries of the world.


He pointed out that the Sultanate, under the leadership of His Majesty the Sultan, accords major importance to strengthen cooperation with all international and regional organisations. He also affirmed fundamentals of the Omani policy in its international relations that aim at supporting the sincere efforts for maintaining security and stability, which are the basis to achieve sustainable development in various regions of the world. Conversation during the meeting touched on the role of UN in activating cooperation among the member states, as well as preparing the atmosphere that is conducive for the success of negotiations, promoting understanding among nations and avoiding exacerbation of conflicts in several countries, in addition to reviewing a number of current issues at the regional arena and the efforts exerted to achieve peace and stability.


On his turn, Antonio Guterres expressed his delight and honour for visiting the Sultanate, as well as its domestic and foreign achievements. He hailed the constant support given by Oman to the UN and all other international organisations to continue implementing its programmes that target serving humanity. He also thanked the Sultanate for its positive contribution in encouraging dialogue and consensus to solve disputes peacefully, which earned the Sultanate the respect of all.
