Sultanate sees 4.9 per cent rise in crimes

MUSCAT: The Sultanate saw a 4.9 per cent increase in crimes in 2017 compared with 2016, according to statistics released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The number of offenders went up to 20,797 as against 20,577 in 2016. Forty-seven per cent of offences were committed by Omanis as against 53 per cent by expatriates in 2017.


Those in the age group 18-29 years committed 38.9 per cent of the offences.


The crime rate was three crimes and five wrongdoers per 1,000 people.


The governorates of Buraimi and Al Wusta saw the maximum number of crimes and criminals (six crimes per 1,000), while Musandam witnessed the lowest.


Violations of law and regulations accounted for 23.4 per cent of the offences, which also include illegal entry into the Sultanate. Other violations include maritime fishing and passport violations.


Violations of weapons and ammunition laws accounted for the least number — 0.6 per cent.
