Sultanate second in food security index

London: For the second consecutive year, the Sultanate maintained its second position at the Arab level in the World Food Security Index 2017, which was published by the Economist magazine. Kuwait topped the Arab world. The Sultanate ranked 28th in the world and was awarded 73.9 points. The index gave the Sultanate 100 points in the availability of food security network programmes, 100 in the index of public spending on agricultural research and development, 83.5 in the agricultural import tariff index and 75 in the farmers’ funding index.


The index pointed out that the total area of agricultural land in the Sultanate is 1,468.8 square km, while the Sultanate’s average score in the human development index is 8 out of 10. Ireland topped the index, followed by the United States, the UK and Singapore. — ONA
