MUSCAT, JAN 20 - The Sultanate has ambitious ongoing projects in sustainable energy, aimed at keeping pace with international changes in the energy sector, said Dr Mohammed bin Hamad al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas.
The Sultanate’s strategy targets to produce 20-30 per cent of electricity from sustainable energy sources by 2030, the minister said. The plan involves two wind power plants, one of which is currently under construction in Thamrait in the Dhofar Governorate with a capacity to provide 50 megawatts of energy once it becomes operational in 2020. The second plant will produce 150 megawatts by 2023.
The Ibri solar plant is expected to be operational by 2021 with a capacity to produce 500 megawatts, in addition to two plants in the main network with a capacity to produce 500 megawatts each. The plan also involves construction of two wind power plants in Duqm with a production capacity of 200 megawatts each, besides a waste recycling plant with a capacity to produce 50 megawatts. A solar project to provide 500 megawatts will be announced in the coming months, and a similar project will be announced next year. The ministry has initiated a small project to produce 100 megawatts as well as a major steam project at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), the minister said.
