Sultanate, Cyprus sign MoU in higher education

MUSCAT: The Sultanate and the Republic of Cyprus on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of higher education. The MoU was signed by Dr Rawya bint Saud al Busaidiyah, Minister of Higher Education and Cypriot Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Christodoulides.


During her meeting with the visiting delegation, Dr Al Busaidiyah welcomed the delegation and gave them an overview of higher education in the Sultanate in its governmental and private sectors, and efforts exerted by the Sultanate to develop the higher education system.


During the meeting, the two sides discussed aspects of cooperation between the Sultanate and the Republic of Cyprus in the fields of transfer of science, knowledge and technology, as well as discussing the latest cooperation agreement in the field of mutual recognition of academic qualifications for higher education between the Sultanate’s Government and the Government of Republic of Cyprus.


For his part, the Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs underlined the interest of the Cypriot side in expanding cooperation with the Omani side in the field of academic consultation, scientific research and exchange programmes, and to find exchange and cooperation programmes between academics and specialists in the higher education sector in both countries through the implementation of joint scientific and research workshops and conferences.


He welcomed the proposals for cooperation with the possibility of allocating a number of scholarships for Omani students from the most prestigious universities in Cyprus, adding that joint scientific cooperation will enhance the bilateral relations between the two friendly countries.


The MoU aims to encourage scientific cooperation between the Sultanate and Cyprus in the field of higher education and scientific research, including the exchange of student visits, experts, specialists, academics, scholarships, joint scientific projects and cooperation in the transfer of science, knowledge and technology between the two countries.


The number of Omani students currently studying in Cyprus is 22, all studying at the University of Nicosia in the field of human medicine.
