MUSCAT: The Sultanate on Monday condemned the suicide bombings that hit several places of the Syrian capital, Damascus and killed more than 30 people and injured many others.

The Sultanate also condemned the suicide bombing at a refugee camp in Anbar province in Iraq that killed and injured innocent displaced people.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement, said the terrorist bombings against innocent people signify lack of religious and moral grounds of their perpetrators and planners.

“These are criminal actions against all norms, religions and tolerant humanitarian values.”

The statement expressed the Sultanate’s sincere condolences and sympathies to the families of the innocent victims, governments of the sisterly Republic of Iraq and the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic, wishing the injured speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, the Syrian army on Monday unilaterally announced a halt to fighting in the country’s south that would coincide with a new round of peace talks in the Kazakh capital Astana.

The army statement, carried on state news agency Sana, said hostilities would stop in the southern provinces of Daraa, Quneitra, and Sweida.

“In order to support the peace process and national reconciliation, a cessation of hostilities took hold at 12:00 pm (midday) on July 2 and will last until midnight on July 6,” the statement said.

The freeze was not expected to include fighting against the IS group.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a wide network of sources on the ground, confirmed that fighting “almost completely stopped” across the mentioned territory. — ONA/AFP
