MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Information Technology Authority (ITA), joins the rest of the world in celebrating the Safer Internet Day, which is celebrated every first Tuesday from February every year. More than 100 countries are celebrating this international day, and this year it comes under the theme of (Create, Connect and Share Respect: A Better Internet Starts with You). On this occasion, ITA, represented by Oman CERT, organised a one-day event at Muscat Grand Mall from 5 pm to 10 pm including educational activities and workshops, targeting parents, adults and kids from 5 to 18 year-old.

In addition, a number of messages will be shared through ITA’s social media accounts under the hashtag #SID2018 to raise awareness on cyber security and promote the culture of proper use of the Internet among adults.

The campaign will also address the Internet risks for children and youngest and the best ways to deal with them, as well as highlighting the legal aspects in the use of the Internet in general and social media channels specifically.

The Safer Internet Day (SID) has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar. It started as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and taken up by the Insafe network as one of its earliest actions in 2005, and then has gone beyond its geographical border to be celebrated by all. From cyberbullying to social networking, each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and chooses a topic reflecting current

concerns. — ONA
