Sultanate at Abu Dhabi IRENA general assembly meeting

MUSCAT: The Sultanate represented by the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) participated in the eighth meeting of the General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held in Abu Dhabi on January 13, and 14.


The Sultanate’s delegation to the meeting was led by Dr Ali bin Hamad al Ghaferi, Assistant Chairman of the PAEW for International Relations and Conferences, who delivered the Sultanate’s speech saying that the Sultanate has completed its study of the National Energy Strategy.


The decision was made to contribute 10 per cent in the production of electricity by 2025, which is estimated at about 3 gigawatts, noting that this study will be re-evaluated in 2020 and efforts are continuous in the Sultanate to launch the first solar projects, which may reach the capacity of 500 megawatts to be launched this year.


He added “We would like to point out that wind energy is a promising aspect of the future of renewable energy in the Sultanate, as indicated by the feasibility studies carried out by the Sultanate.


Therefore, efforts are under way to reserve suitable sites for 100 and 200 MW wind power plants. The meeting discussed the role of renewable energy in facing climate change and achieving the goals of global sustainable development.


The meeting also held two ministerial-level discussions on innovation in the renewable energy sector, ways to stimulate the spread of renewable energy uses, and reviewed the strategic direction of the Agency to help countries accelerate the deployment of renewable energy solutions, climatic goals, economic sector support, boosting energy security and access to it. — ONA
