SALALAH, March 6 -

The Development and Vocational Guidance Department of Sultan Qaboos Hospital launched awareness programme for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) among school and college students on Tuesday.

The campaign would run for a month with a target to involve 1,000 students of different academic institutions of Dhofar Governorate.

“As of now we have shortlisted five schools and three higher education institutions for the campaign as a team has been formed and schedules being coordinated with the institutions,” said an official of the Development and Vocational Guidance Department.

Among the educational institutions where the awareness team would reach are: Al Rabat School, Saidia School, Mazoon bint Ahmed School, Khawla bint Hakim School, Fatima al Zahra Girls School, Salalah College of Technology, Salalah College of Applied Science and Dhofar University.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

The CPR is taught in educational or academic institutions by expert nurses licensed by the American Heart Association to offer specialised courses in CPR, the official said.

The campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of CPR by using bare

hands (without assistive devices) and their effective role in saving lives.

The campaign also aims to raise awareness and health education of the members of the community by allowing them to

deal correctly with various emergency situations that may occur anywhere and anytime.

“Tests in many countries of the world have shown that cardiopulmonary resuscitation is very important in saving people who suffer heart attacks,” he said.
