MUSCAT, NOV 15 - The second edition of the Oman Waste and Environmental Services Conference and Exhibition in December will feature a student innovation lab to help students to convert their ideas into viable projects.

Organised by Omanexpo, about 30 local and international companies will showcase products and services from various waste management segments representing nine countries at the exhibition to be held from December 4 to 5 at the Sheraton Oman Hotel.

Addressing a press conference, Essam Yahya al Sharji, acting head of Corporate Affairs Department, Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah), said that the Sultanate is slowly changing into a circular economy.

“We have to understand that how a circular economy acts as a catalyst for innovation, knowledge and development that will address the need for new technologies, business models and partnership in waste management”, he said.

He said that the student projects are relevant to be’ah’s ongoing environmental awareness campaign.

“Upon selection, the projects will be presented to policy and decision makers, investors, and experts in the waste management field”, he said.

These projects relate to environment protection, water conservation, waste management, waste recycling, wastewater treatment, green architecture, climate change mitigation, pollution abatement, green entrepreneurship, renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainability, clean manufacturing and environmental education.

This initiative will hone local talent, and on a larger scale, pave the way in reinforcing the government’s Omanisation goal in line with its diversification plan, he said.

Prof Steve Walls, senior advisor, Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, stressed on the need for technology of practice in the waste reuse.

“All-out efforts should be made to convert waste material into something of value”, he said.

Kunooz Oman Holding, Oman’s largest privately owned mining group, is the sponsor for the student lab pavilion.

“This is part of the company’s mission to help create and promote sustainable value in the environments it serves”, said Dean Cunningham, CEO of Kunooz Oman.

Earlier, Indrajeet Kumar, Director, Omanexpo, said that the exhibition will once again play a significant part in offering trade and investment opportunities and helping to bring the community together to instill awareness about sustainable waste management.

The conference will address the most critical issues as well as discuss solutions for the sector.
