Steering committee for fisheries sector meets

MUSCAT: The Steering Committee for Fisheries Sector held its first meeting under the chairmanship of Dr Fuad bin Jaafar al Sajwani, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, in the presence of Dr Khamis bin Saif al Jabri, Head of the Implementation Support and Follow-up Unit.


The meeting was held to follow up and support the sector’s initiatives and projects, which come within the plans to develop and enhance the economic growth, diversification and increase the contribution of production sectors to the GDP during the 9th Five-Year Development Plan.


The minister said that the fisheries sector is one of the five prioritised sectors that have been identified and approved by the government for achieving economic diversification.


He noted that the sector has great potentials, such as the strategic location of the Sultanate, the ports and abundant natural resources.


He pointed out that the fisheries sector labs have been positive and came out with many initiatives and projects that should be implemented. The Steering Committee reviewed the summary of the outcomes of the labs, which were held from September 17 to October 26, 2017.


The labs came out with 91 initiatives and projects that cover fish farming, fishing, added value industries and exports.


The committee also discussed the mechanisms for its work during the upcoming period, the guidelines for the committees and work teams, the key performance indicators, means of following up the progress of initiatives in 2018 and the mechanisms that will be adopted by the unit to follow up and support the economic diversification projects in the Sultanate. — ONA
