State Council values HM follow-up of efforts to curb Covid-19 pandemic

Muscat: The Office of the State Council hailed the efforts undertaken by the Sultanate at the behest of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik to stem the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.


The bureau expressed its appreciation for His Majesty the Sultan’s keen follow-up and his noble attention to protect all citizens and residents who live on Oman’s land from the pandemic and to alleviate its impacts on all sectors.


The Office expressed gratitude to His Majesty the Sultan who ordered the setting up of an advanced central laboratory, Oman Public Health Laboratory, as a world-class facility capable of keeping pace with technical progress and modern healthcare enhancement systems.


The State Council’s Office also expressed its recognition for measures undertaken by the Supreme Committee tasked with tackling developments resulting from Covid-19 pandemic. It reiterated calls to uphold the existing commendable level of awareness of all segments of society and their commitment to abide by Covid-19 control procedures.


The Office made the statement on Tuesday during its 6th meeting of the first annual convening of the seventh term. The meeting was headed by State Council Chairman Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Manthri.


The meeting discussed a proposal to amend the Law on Environment Protection and Pollution Control, promulgated under Royal Decree No 112/2001.


During the meeting, the State Council Office hosted Waleed bin Nasser al Shukaili, Deputy Head of the Social Committee, and Salim bin Khuwaiter al Maqbali, Rapporteur of the Committee. The Office approved the Committee’s study the environment proposal.


The Office discussed the Economic Committee’s proposal titled “Study on the stability of Omani Economy in the midst of oil prices collapse and Covid-19 pandemic”. It decided to defer the topic to the next public session.


Reports presented by members of the State Council were discussed during the meeting, which also outlined the agenda of the 7th ordinary session of the first annual convening, due to be held on June 29 and 30, 2020.


To that effect and, based on the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik, the first annual convening of the 7th term of the Council is deemed adjourned with effect from Thursday, July 16, 2020.


This comes in enforcement of provisions of Article 58 (bis-26) of the Basic Law of the State, which states that “The Council of Oman shall have an ordinary convening of not less than 8 months in a year, to convene under His Majesty the Sultan’s command during the month of November every year.”


Meanwhile, Article 58 (bis-29) states that “The call to convene or adjourn ordinary and extraordinary sessions of Oman Council shall be effected by means of a suitable legal instrument.” --ONA
