State Council to discuss labour market policies

MUSCAT: The fourth regular Session of the State Council will today discuss the report pertaining to the study performed by the Economic Committee on “The Challenges of Private Sector Development and Labour Market Policies.” In addition, the proposal of the Committee on Culture, Information and Tourism titled, “The Traditional Crafts: Reality and Ambition”, which the committee plans to study during the current annual sitting will be looked at. The State Council Chairman, Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Mantheri, Chairman of the State Council, will chair the session in the presence of the members and the Secretary General of the Council.


The session will also note the report submitted by Dr Suad bint Mohammed al Lawati, State Council Vice-Chairperson, about the participation of the Council delegation at the World Summit of heads of parliaments held under the theme, “United to shape the future”, held from 12-13 December 2016 in Abu Dhabi.


GFOTU delegation received


The State Council Chairman, Dr Al Mantheri received delegation of members of the General Union of Workers, headed by Nabhan bin Ahmed al Battashi, Chairman of the General Federation of Oman Trade Union (GFOTU).


Dr Al Mantheri welcomed the GFOTU delegation and noted its role in protecting workers’ rights and safeguard their interests, and commended their achievements as one of the three parties represented in the government, employers and workers.


He pointed out that the dialogue between these parties is an appropriate approach to find relevant solutions to all issues related to the process of production, which contributes to the overall development to achieve the objectives of the government’s plans to increase employment opportunities and create an atmosphere of job stability.


Dr Al Mantheri wished the Chairman of GFOTU further success in its work to serve the interests of workers and boosts productivity.


Battashi highlighted the importance of social dialogue between the parties for enabling stability in work and increase in productivity, pointing to the important role that legislations and laws have.


Culture Committee meeting


The study titled, “The reality of civil and private libraries in the Sultanate”, was the focus of discussions at the third meeting of the Culture, Information and Tourism Committee.


It concentrated on identifying the reality and role of the community with respect to civil and private libraries, its future prospects and challenges involved. The discussions also touched on the legislative and regulatory aspects relating to this study. The meeting headed by Dr Ahmed bin Ali al Meshaikhi, Head of the Culture, Information and Tourism Committee, was held in the presence of the committee members and the Secretariat staff.


Social committee meeting


The Social Committee at the State Council held a meeting, chaired by Dr Hamad bin Suleiman al Salmi, Head of the Committee.


The Committee reviewed several topics related to its studies during the current sitting. Further, the Committee viewed outcomes of its study on status of policies in promoting health, as well as outcomes of its study on policies and legislations governing management of endowment funds, how to investment them in the Sultanate and outcomes of hosts organised on developing social security system. — ONA
