State Council Chairperson receives Nato delegation

MUSCAT: Dr Suad bint Mohamed al Lawati, State Council Chairperson, received on Wednesday the delegation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato), headed by the Commander of the National Defence College of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Lieutenant-General Christine (Chris) Whitecross. Dr Suad welcomed the delegation and hoped that their visit to the Sultanate would be successful. The delegation received a briefing about the State Council and its role in the national work in accordance with its competences and powers within the framework of the state of institutions and law established by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.


Dr Suad highlighted the process of development of the Shura in the Sultanate, reviewing the stages of its evolution to ensure the promotion of participation of the citizens in decision-making and adopting the best parliamentary practices to contribute to this end. She explained that the Council membership includes experienced and specialised members having valuable and varied expertise to enable efficient and significant discussion of subjects of national importance that is presented to them.


The Omani women, she pointed out have achieved remarkable successes in all fields, perform active role at the State Council and play a proactive role in dealing with social and economic issues through the Council’s platform. The meeting included discussion on topics of mutual concern.


For her part, Chris White Cross emphasised that the visit serves to promote cooperation between Oman and the Parliamentary Assembly of Nato. She expressed happiness regarding the visit the Sultanate, praising the development witnessed in all fields.


She stressed on Nato’s keenness to strengthen its relations with the Sultanate for the benefit of both parties. The meeting was attended by the Council members, Yahya bin Rashid al Jumaa, Omar bin Salim al Marhoon and Dr Wafa bint Salim al Harrasi.
