When star chefs cook for other chefs

Kabeer Yousuf –

It was a treat par excellence for ‘the who is who of gastronomy’ from various hotels in the country when they were received with an authentic Omani Luban ice tea, served with a five-course menu after being seated by the host and placed the napkin on their laps.
And above all, what made the whole difference was that they were cooked for by none other than Oman’s celebrity chef Issa al Lamki, an avid foodie and a globetrotter who visits places, experiments diverse dishes and creates a fusion out of it.
Al Lamki and his counterpart Master Chef Ajay Chopra created an amazing Indo-Omani 5 Course Degustation Menu, lesser said it was an outstanding evening with great food at the Jashn by Deepak Daryani.
Aimed at celebrating and bringing chefs from different walks of life representing various restaurants of Oman together on a single table was a manifestation of celebrating different cultures, Indian and Omani Cuisines.
“This is a noble concept of bringing together all chefs who are behind the scenes forward and offering a delicious 5-course menu treat. It is a unique opportunity to network and know each other as well”, Chef Issa al Lamki told the Observer.
While the basic ingredients for all dishes were all similar, the cooking styles and recipes stood different aiming at celebrating great friendship, food and love, according to the proponents.
Some of the kings of kitchen included, besides Issa al Lamki, representing his own brand Hitam Restaurant, Ajay Chopra, mentor and partner of Jashn Restaurant, and legendary father of confectionary in Oman; Hans, Owner, German Bakery; Shankar Kotian, Exec Chef of Crowne Plaza Sohar; Sunil Wagh, Exec Chef of Golden Tulip Nizwa; Neil Francis Sequeira Exec. Chef, Golden Tulip Seeb; Ajay Dhoundiyal, Executive Chef, Park Inn; Walid Diab, Executive Chef, Ramada Muscat; Richard Bias, Executive Chef, The Chedi Muscat; Prashant Kumar, Head Chef, Al Manjur, The Cave; Malik al Jadhhami, Executive Sous Chef, Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC); Nader al Aisari, Owner, Tanzanite; and Sami Bazih, Executive Chef, Automatic Restaurants.
“We are trying to celebrate Oman and India together, by hosting this one of a kind event and we are privileged to have Oman’s celebrity chef Issa al Lamki cook for the rest of the chefs out there”, Deepak told the Observer.
