SQU students achieve top positions in ME contests

By Salim Al Jabri — MUSCAT: MARCH 7 - A group of students from the Earth Science Department of the College of Science and from the Petroleum Engineering Department of the College of Engineering at SQU won top positions in various competitions organised as part of the First Middle East Conference for the geoscience students. The conference was organised by the American Association of Petroleum Geologist, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, and the European Association for Engineering and Earth Science. It was held in Al Ain, UAE, from February 26 to March 1.


The competitions included the Imperial Barrel Award competition, the challenge competition, and the puzzle competition.


The Imperial Barrel Award is a global competition which is organised at the level of the five continents of the world and it was based on the projects done by the geoscience students. During eight weeks, the students work on geophysical data set and geology to identify the hydrocarbons accumulations and estimate their reserves in a detailed and comprehensive study. They present their results in front of a panel of experts from international companies in oil industry field. The winner in the semifinal will participate in the finals that will be organised in the headquarters of the American Association of Petroleum Geologist as part of the events of its annual conference. The team of SQU won in the semifinal against the Middle East universities, so they will participate in the global competitions during the annual conference of the American Association of Petroleum Geologist in Houston, US on April 2-5. The team includes Faisal al Shukaili, Samah al Rawahi, Shatha al Esa’ai and Moosa al Harthi from the College of Engineering.


The challenge competition is a contest in the Earth Science field organised by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists for the Earth Science students. The questions of the competitions are about general information in geophysics and geology. The team of SQU won in the semifinal, so they will present the Middle East and the North Africa in the global competitions which will be organised in the US within the events of the annual conference of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists on September 24-29. The team includes Ahmed al Nabhani and Esra al Hinai. In addition to the above achievements, the students of SQU also won six awards for the best oral presentation and the best poster.


Rufaida al Jabri won the first position in the best oral presentation competition. In the best poster competition, Esra al Hinai, and Shatha al Esa’ai won the first position, Amna al Dairi won the second position, and Moza al Shidi and Jenan Ahmed Alattar in the third position.


Students from SQU won first positions in the Middle East Conference for Earth Science.
