MUSCAT: The College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University and College of Medicine at Weill Cornell Qatar partnered in holding a health promotion and chronic disease screening event on January 25.

The event took place at Muscat City Centre, where a total of 45 students from both colleges teamed up in organising and running the event. The event covered common chronic diseases that have significant social impact such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, colon and breast cancers and hereditary blood disorders.

The activities were ran across six stations where health screening, education and professional consultations were offered. The participants had the chance to obtain new information and expand their level of awareness about common diseases.

The information given was on how to recognise all the symptoms, acknowledge the risk factors as well as gaining the chance of undergoing free blood glucose, cholesterol, uric acid testing and a measure of blood pressure.

The general message to the public from this event is that ‘early detection is the best protection’. This activity is in line with the mission of College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University to promote collaborations with medical colleges from around the world. These collaborations are essential in linking the academic knowledge gained by medical students and applying it in order to provide service to the community.
