MUSCAT: The Centre of Excellence in Marine Biotechnology (CEMB) of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in association with European Society of Marine Biotechnology (ESMB) is to organise an international conference titled ‘The second GCC marine biotechnology conference: Emerging opportunities and future perspectives’. The conference will take place at Al Faham Stage, SQU Cultural Centre, on October 31 and November 1.

Talks and poster presentation in four major themes will be presented, including ‘Marine biodiversity and sustainability’; ‘Biofouling and antifouling’; ‘Fisheries and aquaculture biotechnology’ and ‘Marine genetics and bioinformatics.

The topics of the conference are selected on the basis of current and planned research activity in Oman and Middle East. The conference is aimed at assessing and promoting the development of marine biotechnology in the Gulf and to bring together scientists for the establishment of new collaborative activity.

The focus of the conference will be current and proposed marine biotechnology research and the opportunities for its application in the Gulf region. The conference will host internationally recognized keynote speakers from France, UK, Australia and Spain. Speakers from SQU and other universities in Oman and GCC countries, representative ministries and the commercial sector would also take part in the conference.

Graduate students will be encouraged to participate through a scheduled poster session, for which a prize for the best poster will be awarded. Travel support for international students will be provided.

The registration and abstract submission are open now. The deadline for abstract submission is June 1. The website of the conference is https://conferences.squ.edu.om/marbio. For more information, conference coordinator Cristina B Angel (marbio@squ.edu.om) can be contacted.
