Spending on healthcare takes 2.7 per cent of GDP

MUSCAT: Spending on the health sector makes up 2.7 per cent of the Sultanate’s gross domestic product (GDP) and 81.1 per cent of the total healthcare spending is borne by the government. That was stated by Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health. He said 83.1 per cent of hospitals and 62.2 of outpatient clinics are managed by the ministry of health. The ministry also runs 95.5 of hospital beds and 94.5 of inpatients. The minister of health pointed out that mortality rate has dropped significantly and the ministry has attained a better control over infectious disease and the healthcare development has been recognized by the Legatum Prosperity Index which ranked the Sultanate second in the Arab world and 26th internationally in the health index, the minister said. The eighth five-year plan saw the opening of five hospitals, 4 health centres and 39 medical complexes all over the Sultanate. During the same period the ministry introduced 79 diagnostic and treatment services in the healthcare institutions, the minister said.
