A total of 4,516 differently-abled children have been enrolled in rehabilitation centres across the Sultanate this academic year, said the Ministry of Social Development. The number stood at 4,103 in the previous year. At present, there are 29 government rehabilitation centres, including 27 Al-Wafa centres, the Vocational Rehabilitation and Evaluation Center in Al-Khoud and the Al-Aman Center for Rehabilitation.

Bader bin Fareesh al Yahyaei, Head of Rehabilitation Department, the General Directorate for the Disabled Affairs, said: “The private rehabilitation centres are licensed by the ministry to offer services with specific fees for both citizens and residents.”

Some private centres provide services for only one type of disability, for instance, autism spectrum disorders.

The government’s centres provide services for all disabilities.

Sharing her experience, Sunita, a mother of a child with a congenital defect, said “My daughter is at the Centre for Special Education at the ISM for the past two years. She had congenital deformities and learning difficulties. I could see a great change in her behavioural pattern, and thank God, she is able to do her personal chores by herself whereas we had to help her in the past.”
