SUHAR: The Faculty of Language Studies at Sohar University organised the first symposium of master’s programme in TESOL under the slogan ‘Practices, Issues and Perspectives’. The symposium was held at Al Suwaiq building on February 1 with the participation of specialists from the university and various other educational institutions such as Sultan Qaboos University, Shinas College of Technology and the GD of Education in North Al Batinah Governorate.

Prof Barry Winn, Vice-Chancellor, who opened the symposium welcomed the attendees, and honoured the sponsors of the symposium. Several papers were presented on topics such as critical view of current practices in teaching and learning and the reading motivation. A working paper discussed the culturally-centred English language education for 21st century students in Oman, and using authentic materials in EFL classroom. The master’s programme in TESOL is one of the new additions to Sohar University programmes and is considered one of the major postgraduate programmes at the university.
