Sohar University holds annual teaching, learning conference

SUHAR: Sohar University organised the 4th annual conference on teaching and learning under the patronage of Shaikh Ali bin Ahmed al Shamsi, Wali of Suhar, on September 13.


The conference was attended by the academic and administrative staff and guests from various government and private institutions in the Sultanate. The theme of the conference was ‘Discover and Learn’.


Professor Barry Winn, Vice-Chancellor, Sohar University, opened the ceremony with his welcome speech. Dr Junifer Abatayo, conference chair, introduced the keynote speaker, Dr Stewart Ross, Director of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Minnesota State University, US. The focus of his talk was on the joy of teaching.


The conference is considered as one of the most important events in the university. This year’s conference included more than 40 presentations and workshops, highlighting important academic aspects such as ‘Technology-Enhanced Classrooms’, ‘Contemporary Learning and Higher Education Assessment”, and “Cooperation and Professional Development”.


The conference also highlighted ‘The Millennial Mindsets and Future of Work, Developing a Collective Agenda to Engage Pedagogical Shifts’, and ‘Teaching and Learning Assessment Strategies’.


The conference had sessions on ‘Evidence-based strategies to enrich student learning’ and ‘The effectiveness of using social support sources in reducing the work pressure of a sample of Omani teachers’.


Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Shibli, Faculty of Law, and Dr Mohammed bin Saleh al Ajmi, Faculty of Education and Arts, were honoured with the Distinguished Teaching Award for 2017-2018.
