Smart cities to augment Sultanate’s growth plans

MUSCAT, April 24 - Oman’s ambitious smart city plans will lead the national growth trajectory to a different level altogether as the applicability of the same is not limited to a small segment, but it can touch all areas of life, according to Dr Yahya bin Nasser al Khusaibi, Under-Secretary of Ministry of Legal Affairs, who presided over the Second Smart Cities and Industry 4.0 Summit. The adaptability of smart concept is to give great fillip to a diverse spectrum of the economy and the concepts of smart tourism, smart retail, smart healthcare, smart energy, smart logistics, smart field operations and smart utilities will be a reality making Oman one of the most desired countries in the world.


“When it comes to legal arena, the applicability of smart legal system is to yield greater benefits to the country towards zero-crime rate and fast adjudication of cases to help people get justice on time,” Al Khusaibi added. A BMI Research has revealed that investment in smart cities has been boosting Oman’s IT market to a record high of RO 122 million by 2019, thanks to the public and private sectors efforts in investing in smart city projects in accordance with the Oman Future Vision 2040 transformation goals.


These investments are expected to transform citizen experiences, and enhance productivity and national economic competitiveness.


“Oman’s smart cities are rapidly moving from theory to reality. Comex is an ideal platform to showcase how Smart Cities can enhance quality of life, enable real-time decision-making, and drive new levels of economic growth and job creation,” said Waheed al Hamaid, Country Manager, SAP Oman.


“As Oman enhances its global trade routes, Smart Ports have a strong opportunity to make it easier, faster, and more cost-effective to ship goods through Oman.”


“The major reasons for smart cities are improving performance, reducing costs, creating innovation services, generating new revenue sources,” said Abdulaziz Jaafar, Director of ICT and Business Development, Ooredoo, Oman.


The scope of smart cities can be witnessed in tele medicine, traffic control with an increased number of payments, logistics, energy, manufacturing, farming and public sector reaping the benefits of such initiatives.


The second edition of the Smart Cities and Industry 4.0 Summit, highlights artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), while exploring how new technology is set to affect manufacturing, oil and gas industry, education, urban development and ‘cognitive city planning’ as well as how AI will provide new solutions for logistics and healthcare sectors.
