Sixth Economic Awards to support SMEs launched

MUSCAT: Al Roya newspaper on Sunday launched the 6th edition Al Roya Economic Award under the patronage of Said bin Saleh al Kiyoumi, Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI). This came during a press conference, which was held at the OCCI premises in the presence of Hatim bin Hamad al Taeei, Editor-in-Chief of Al Roya newspaper, Supervisor General of the Award, who said, “This award is the supporting arm for economic projects and initiatives in the Sultanate to highlight them known to the public and to honour them”.


The award aims to highlight successful models in the Sultanate in the areas of investment, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), woman home projects, social responsibility initiatives, government and private sectors’ projects to contribute to provide an added-value to the economic sector in the Sultanate.


Al Taeei said in his speech that Al Roya newspaper designed this award to be an addition to its series of initiatives in the field of social responsibility and partnership approach. He affirmed that there are success indicators for the continuity of this award, as the number of participations over the past years was more than 500 which are characterised by varied ideas. He added that the best of those participations were honoured in order to be a role model in the world of business and leading initiatives.


Khalid bin al Safi al Huraibi, Acting CEO of the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development, “Riyada” said that the award aims to contribute to the promotion of media initiatives that instil a culture of entrepreneurship. He added that Riyada looks forward to further cooperation in such initiatives to sensitise institutions about the standards that are used to evaluate success.


Ahmed bin Abdul Karim al Hooti, Jury member of Al Roya Economic Award gave a presentation during which he touched on the standards and mechanisms of evaluation. He highlighted the importance of informing the participants about the application form of the award and to learn about the required conditions and standards.


He also affirmed that the award targets projects that contribute to the added value, the projects that support the local economic development, the projects that use local production elements (non-human) and contribute to the substitution of imports, improve the income of owners and other enterprises.


This year, the award’s categories include best government project, best project in the private sector, best project in the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), best national investment project, best foreign investment project, best performing bank, best economic personality, best social responsibility project, best woman and craft project, best e-marketing projects across the social networking namely Instagram, Facebook and snapchat.
