Significant fall in crimes

By Samuel Kutty — MUSCAT: MARCH 12 - While crime rate witnessed a significant fall of 17 per cent in the Sultanate, three fourth of the offences were committed by illegal immigrants in the country. Of a total 18,860 crimes in 2015 against 22,624 in 2014, law breakers constituted the highest percentage of 25.9 offences. According to National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), 20.7 per cent of cases related to financial malpractices including money laundering and theft. While 18.2 per cent of the total offenders were involved in drug offences, alcohol and related offences accounted for 3.4 per cent of the total perpetrators.


Juvenile offenders in the age group of nine to 17 years accounted for 3.3 per cent of the total offenders, with most of them involved in financial offences. The number of offenders who committed crimes against individuals accounted for 19.1 per cent. The crimes included murder, theft, threats etc. Crimes relating to social misbehaviour and public nuisances accounted for 3.4 per cent, the NCSI data showed. According to Oman 2016 Crime & Safety Report, violent crime remains a rarity in the country and they are limited to crimes of opportunity and petty theft.


“High-value items that can be easily transported remain the most common items stolen. Vehicle theft is also prevalent, especially when drivers leave their keys in the car when they run into a store to purchase items”, says the report prepared by Overseas Security Advisory Council Overseas.


Cyber crime remains limited to common scams requesting money upfront for promised services or chances to obtain more money with a down payment, adds the report.
