Muscat, Dec 30 - Majlis Ash’shura is discussing a suggestion made by a member for establishing model fuel stations in the Sultanate.

Members of the public came up their own suggestions for a model fuel station after it was announced that the suggestion will be discussed.

Mohammed al Balushi, a Muscat resident, welcomed the suggestion and thanked the council for raising such significant suggestion.

“This is vital especially for those going on long drives. Such a model fuel station might provide accommodation, restaurants, mechanic services and others,” said Al Balushi.

The move, he said, will push other service providers to follow this example.

Said al Hajri, who works in Muscat but drives home every weekend, welcomed the initiative.

“I hope it becomes reality soon. I struggle every week when driving back home. Even the basic minimum services are not available nowadays in fuel stations, forget about technical issues.”

“The driver has to either park his car somewhere and come back with a mechanic or pay charges for getting the car moved to the nearest garage,” said Al Hajri.

He felt such a station could solve many problems faced by the public.

Earlier, the Observer had investigated the lack of many services in fuel stations. In contrast to the rising number of fuel stations all over the Sultanate, tyre-filling pumps and other public services typically associated with fuel stations are increasingly becoming non-existent.

Motorists have taken to social media to voice their anger over poor facilities at many fuel stations.

Sixteen new petrol stations were opened across Oman in the first seven months of 2016 and 14 new licences issued during the year, said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
